Understanding a geography means looking at it with a bird’s-eye view and pondering where its boundaries lie. Right next to it, on its edges and corners, lies another geography, another history, other narratives, other communities… something different. Humans, both conceptually and practically, tend to draw boundaries. Their existence not only requires them to find a position within a complex system of relationships, but their social lives and biological survival also depend on making distinctions.
What separates one individual from another? What distinguishes one culture from another? Where are the dividing lines between humans and non-humans—be they other mortal life forms or divine beings? One of the primary sources for answering such questions is the myths and narratives that map the world individuals inhabit.
History is always filled with unanswered questions, which is why it stands in opposition to life in our minds. Although facts and events belong to history, they are also, in some way, narrative and human. The mystery of history stems from this. Rituals, symbols, representations, and all actions in human creative activity are part of this mystery.
